When neighbours were family

Think back to the village well, the mohalla chaupal, the lane where every house knew every other. Nobody planned these communities. They grew on their own, out of need and habit.

When one family had a surplus of milk, it reached the neighbours. When a wedding or a harvest came, the whole lane pitched in. If a shopkeeper cheated someone, the entire neighbourhood knew by evening, so no one dared. The grain you bought came from a farmer you knew by name, and the milk came from a cow you could see.

Trust was not a feature. It was simply how life worked.

Then came the cities

As we moved to metros for work and opportunity, something quietly slipped away. Many of us now live in apartments where we do not know the family next door. We order from faceless apps, buy from shelves where no one can tell us where the food came from, and pay whatever the price tag says.

We gained convenience, but we started surviving as individuals instead of living as a community. Alone, we have no bargaining power, no way to verify what we are buying, and no one to turn to when quality slips.

What a community gives back

When people come together again, the old strengths return:

• Lower prices: many buyers together can buy at bulk rates that no single household could get.
• Better deals: vendors compete to serve a group that buys regularly.
• Trust: when you know the people you buy with and the people you buy from, cheating has nowhere to hide.
• Transparency: members can see where the product comes from, who grew it, and how it was made.
• Purity: a community that cares about what it eats keeps asking the right questions, and sources only from those who can answer them.

Where we begin: community farming

At ShopApni, we are starting with what matters most: food. Through community farming, members take part in growing their own vegetables, so they know exactly where their food comes from and how it is grown. It is a simple idea with a deep effect. People who farm together start to know each other.

That is the real foundation. Relationships come first, and everything else follows.

What comes next: community bulk deals

Once people come together and trust grows, we will open community bulk deals. When a vendor lists a product for bulk sale, members reserve their share with a small advance. As soon as enough members have joined, the order is placed with the vendor. If the target is not met, every advance is returned.

More buyers means a better price, a clear deal, and a vendor who knows an engaged community is behind every order.

Reclaiming What We Consume. Rebuilding How We Live.

I believe we have taken centralisation too far.

We started by allowing big brands to make our clothes and shoes. That made sense — scale brought efficiency, affordability and convenience.

But slowly, those same systems entered our kitchens, our refrigerators and our bathrooms.

Today, a handful of large companies can influence what we eat, what we drink, what we put on our skin and what we use in our homes.

And when the distance between the producer and the consumer becomes thousands of kilometres, something gets lost.

Trust gets lost. Accountability gets lost. And often, quality gets compromised.

Products have to survive long supply chains. They have to sit on shelves for weeks or months. They have to be produced at enormous scale and remain commercially viable.

So chemicals, preservatives, artificial processes and excessive packaging become easier choices.

Not necessarily because everyone involved is bad. But because the system rewards scale more than proximity.

A Different System: Decentralisation

I believe we need to build a different system. We need to decentralise.

Imagine a country where every community is not merely a market for someone else, but also a producer:

• Where farmers grow food for people around them.
• Where local families and skilled homemakers create products for their communities.
• Where experienced dairy owners can supply fresh milk directly to consumers instead of becoming just another supplier in a massive industrial chain.
• Where technology connects these small producers to thousands of consumers without turning them into faceless corporations.

That is the idea behind ShopApni.

Our Community Farming model, our Home Made Products and our A2 Milk multi-vendor platform are three different businesses on the surface.

But underneath, they are driven by one common philosophy: Put people and communities back at the centre of the economy.

Because when production is decentralised, prosperity can be decentralised too.

• A farmer earns more.
• A homemaker becomes a producer.
• A local dairy owner gets direct access to consumers.
• A consumer knows who produced what they are buying.

And the money doesn’t always have to travel out of the community. It can circulate within it.

That is how interdependent, self-sustaining local economies are built.

From Political Freedom to Economic Freedom

India became politically independent decades ago. But political independence alone does not automatically create economic independence.

Our modern economic structures still carry the shadows of systems built during colonial rule, including the extractive model developed under the East India Company — where local resources and production were organised primarily to serve distant commercial interests.

We don’t need to live under those structures forever.

The answer is not to reject modern technology. The answer is to use technology to reverse the direction of dependence.

Technology should not only make large companies larger. It should make small communities stronger.

The internet, smartphones, digital payments and modern logistics can now give a farmer, a homemaker or a local dairy owner something that was almost impossible a few decades ago: direct access to the consumer.

That is the opportunity in front of us. And that is what we want to build.

Decentralise the Economy. Decentralise the Power.

I believe decentralisation should not end with commerce. Because if economic power becomes concentrated in the hands of a few, eventually influence and decision-making can become concentrated too.

Real freedom requires power to move closer to the people.

• Closer to communities.
• Closer to producers.
• Closer to consumers.
• Closer to those whose lives are actually affected by the decisions being made.

Political decentralisation matters just as much as economic decentralisation.

Because freedom should not simply mean choosing who governs us. Freedom should also mean having a meaningful say in how we produce, what we consume, who we support and how our communities grow.

This is not a rejection of progress. It is a different definition of progress.

Not a world where everything comes from one place. But a world where every place has the ability to create something of value.

Not one giant economy dependent on a few centres of power. But thousands of strong local economies, connected to one another.

Not dependence. Interdependence. Not centralised control. Distributed power.

That is the future I believe in. And that is the future ShopApni is trying to build.

Decentralise the economy. Decentralise the power.
And only then can we truly experience what real freedom means.
